THE OLD TAVERNS OF MADRID
AND EL 34 DE ATOCHA: THE COOL TAVERN OF THE 21ST CENTURY

The first references to taverns in Madrid date back to no less than the 11th century, when the primitive city was recovered for Christianity and the boom in commerce began, a boom that would become increasingly more accentuated in the centuries to come and multiply exponentially when Madrid became the capital of the state under King Philip II in 1562.

It was then that the inhabitants of the Villa y Corte were joined on a daily basis by foreigners from all over the world who came to buy or sell and to do business in the administration of the empire. The taverns, which incidentally receive this name because the first ones were located in Tabernillas street, very close to Atocha street where the CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha hotel is located, are the places where people eat and drink, close deals, establish friendships and awaken love.

Already in 1600 the city census lists more than 300 taverns serving locals and strangers alike. Nowadays, it is impossible to talk about Madrid without mentioning its taverns, some of which have centuries-old histories and are a must to visit.

These taverns, as well as maintaining the most traditional in their tables and bars, also remained open against all odds, including some of them during the Civil War. They are century-old taverns that continue to survive and stand proudly in the streets of Madrid, such as: Casa Alberto, open since 1827, Lhardy since 1839, La Taberna de Antonio Sánchez 1787, Taberna La Carmencita 1854, Casa Labra 1879, Bodegas Ricla 1867, Café Comercial 1887, El Sobrino de Botín, declared the oldest restaurant in the world and Casa Ciriaco, are just some of them.
