CoolRooms arrives in Portugal with Palácio Duarte, a historic palace reimagined as a luxury hotel in the heart of Porto.
In the heart of Porto’s Historic Center, between Belomonte and Comércio do Porto streets, stands Palacio Duarte, a building whose history dates back to the late 15th century. Its origins are linked to João da Paz, physician to Kings D. João II and D. Manuel I, who established his residence here.
Today, following a restoration that preserves its original architecture with Renaissance roots and a Baroque character resulting from its major 18th- century renovation, the palace is reborn as a five-star hotel where history, Atlantic light, and contemporary design coexist in harmony.
Sleep among history, light, and serenity
CoolRooms Palacio Duarte houses 47 rooms and suites spread across the different levels of the historic building, where the original architecture engages in dialogue with a contemporary design created for rest. Atlantic light streams through its historic windows, illuminating fine materials, natural textiles, and a color palette inspired by Porto.
Inside, you can still feel the beauty of the polychrome coffered ceilings, the elliptical skylight that floods the staircase with natural light, the wrought-iron balconies, and the sash windows overlooking the Douro River.
The essence of Portuguese cuisine
Palacio Duarte’s restaurant takes its name from Porto’s former Customs House and pays tribute to Manuel Pacheco, the first Customs judge, who transformed
this residence into the palace we know today during the 18th century.
Centuries later, Alfândega revives that spirit of exchange and cultural richness through Portuguese cuisine where the ingredient is the true star. Fish from the Atlantic coast, select meats, and vegetables from small Portuguese producers make up a menu grounded in seasonality, origin, and respect for traditional recipes.
