A PALACE WITH THE SOUL OF PORTO<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the heart of Porto’s Historic Centre, between Rua de\u00a0Belomonte\u00a0and Rua do Com\u00e9rcio do Porto and just a few minutes from the Douro, stands a group of four historic buildings whose heart is the former Pal\u00e1cio de\u00a0Belomonte, also known as Casa dos Pacheco Pereira.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Its documented origins date back to the late 15th and early 16th centuries, when Mestre Jo\u00e3o da Paz, physician and surgeon to Kings D. Jo\u00e3o II and D. Manuel I, commissioned his residence on this site. That first house marks the beginning of a story that has\u00a0accompanied\u00a0Porto for more than five centuries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the 18th century, Manuel Pacheco, the first judge of the\u00a0<\/span>Alf\u00e2ndega<\/span>\u00a0do Porto (Porto’s Customs House), drove the great transformation of the old residence. That intervention gave rise<\/span>, to a large extent,<\/span>\u00a0to the Baroque-character palace that survives\u00a0<\/span>today<\/span>\u00a0and that would remain linked for generations to the Pacheco Pereira name.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A surname\u00a0closely associated\u00a0with Portuguese history, one that also evokes Duarte Pacheco Pereira, navigator,\u00a0soldier\u00a0and cosmographer, one of the great figures of the Age of Discovery. A history linked to a Portugal that looked out towards the Atlantic and made knowledge,\u00a0navigation\u00a0and exchange with other lands an essential part of its identity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Known as Casa dos Pacheco Pereira or Pal\u00e1cio de\u00a0Belomonte, the building still bears the traces of that era and of the transformations that followed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A palace that moves to Porto's rhythm<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After\u00a0remaining\u00a0in the hands of the Pacheco Pereira family for generations, in 1866 the palace became the headquarters of Banco\u00a0Alian\u00e7a.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

1888 marked the beginning of one of the most singular chapters in its history: its connection with the Companhia de\u00a0Caminhos\u00a0de Ferro\u00a0Atrav\u00e9s\u00a0de \u00c1frica (the Trans-African Railway Company). This railway period even left its mark on the main fa\u00e7ade, where the Pacheco Pereira coat of arms was replaced with the company’s crest, topped by a royal crown, and some of its openings were converted into portals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In time, Belomonte would reinvent itself once again, becoming a space dedicated to creativity and education as part of the Escola Superior Art\u00edstica do Porto (ESAP).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Inside, stone, wood,\u00a0iron\u00a0and light reveal the passage of time. The grand granite staircase draws the eye up towards a richly ornamented elliptical skylight; coffered ceilings and historic stuccowork sit alongside stone walls and wrought-iron balconies. The symmetrical main fa\u00e7ade, articulated with pilasters, and the wide rear veranda with granite details complete the preserved architectural heritage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

More than five hundred years after Jo\u00e3o da Paz’s first\u00a0houses, the palace begins a new chapter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The restoration project revives this historic complex with deep respect for its heritage, bringing original features together with contemporary architecture and design. The historic spaces now engage in dialogue with fine materials, natural\u00a0textures\u00a0and new interventions designed for rest and hospitality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today, CoolRooms Palacio Duarte opens its doors once again to welcome a new generation of\u00a0travellers.
